Citizenship

Naturalisation is the step after permanent residence: the vote, a South African passport, and an end to residence conditions.

Naturalisation

A permanent resident of five years or more may apply for naturalisation under the South African Citizenship Act. The ordinary requirements include:

  • being 18 years of age or older;
  • lawful permanent residence in South Africa;
  • ordinary residence in the Republic for the twelve months before the application, and the prescribed total period of residence before that;
  • good character;
  • an intention to continue residing in South Africa;
  • the ability to communicate in an official language; and
  • knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.

Unlike permanent residence, a naturalisation application is lodged at a local Home Affairs office. We check eligibility against your residence history, prepare the application and supporting documents, and follow the file with the Department.
